The quality of races on Day 4 is always extremely good, as the Festival ends on a high. Of course, the highlight of the day is the Cheltenham Gold Cup, but there are other big races as well which you’ll want to pay attention to.
We start the day with this Grade 1, 2m 1f Hurdle for juveniles. Being a novice hurdle, the Triumph can sometimes be quite unpredictable.
There’s not a great deal of form to study, which means that the market movements can often be a good indicator. If you see a horse being heavily backed on the exchanges, it can often be a clue that someone has some inside knowledge, and in this type of race that is worth following.
This 2m 7f Grade 1 Hurdle is open to horses of 4 years and older. Prize money of £125,000 ensures that a high class field will always turn out to contest the race. It’s notable that a few long shots have triumphed in the Albert Bartlett in recent years, meaning punters would be well advised to consider the prospects of the entire race card and not just concentrate on the market leaders.
This is the big one! Probably the most prestigious steeplechase on the jumps calendar, the Gold Cup is a 3m 2f Grade 1 race over 22 fences, where the best of the best compete for prize money of £625,000.
This is clearly the feature race of the entire festival, and it’s one where the bookies expect to take the most bets. Favourites have had mixed fortunes over the year though, so in this race you’re best sticking with your own form study and not letting the market guide you too much.
