The Qatar World Cup has been nothing if not controversial since their winning bid was announced. There have been numerous allegations of corruption regarding the bidding process, with FIFA officials accused of accepting bribes in return for votes.

Later, we saw accusations of human rights abuses surrounding the migrant workers employed to build the new stadia to host the tournament. According to leading charities such as Amnesty, this has never been resolved.

There have also been questions raised about the timing of the event. This is the first ever World Cup not to be held in the summer (for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere). It had to be moved to November and December because of concerns about player safety, due to the temperatures in Qatar in June and July.

All these things have cast a shadow over the way FIFA have handled the tournament, but they shouldn’t be allowed to get in the way of the actual football. None of this is the fault of the players or the fans, and hopefully it won’t detract from the quality of the football on show.

It’s anticipated that fewer fans than normal will be attending in person, but a global TV audience will be watching at home, and after the huge success of Russia 2018, expectations will be high. Can France retain the trophy? Will Brazil live up to expectations? Can England go one better this time round? We’ll soon see…
